Rear Foot Conditions

Severs Disease
(children and pre-teens)

Active children between 7-14 are prone to a condition called Severs Disease. The growth plate in the heel bone can become irritated during exercise causing pain and even limping. A combination of rapid growth, tight muscles and poor foot posture can all contribute to this condition.

Initial treatment involves stretching, reducing activities, heel lifts and footwear advice.

Sometimes an orthotic may be necessary to correct the alignment of the heel bone.

Plantar Fasciitis and Heel Spurs

The plantar fascia is a ligament on the bottom of the foot it starts at the heel bone and extends towards the toes. When this ligament gets irritated it can cause pain most commonly toward the heel and commonly referred to as a heel spur. It is usually most painful first thing in the morning but if left untreated pain can continue throughout the day.

Early treatment can be simple and effective with home exercises, foot wear advice and strapping.

In more severe cases where pain has been present for several months orthotics may be necessary to support the plantar fascia and take the tension of the heel.
